1 - Arvind Panagariya resigned as the NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman

Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya has resigned from his position to re-join academia. He will join the Columbia University as a professor. He is a Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University.

Mr Panagariya was appointed to the post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2015. He was the former chief economist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He has worked with the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in various capacities.

2 - Jamaica’s veteran Sprinter Usain Bolt retired

Jamaica’s veteran Sprinter Usain Bolt retired from the Athletics world. Usain Bolt is the first person to hold both the 100 metres and 200 metres world records.

Usain Bolt achieved milestone at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio when he won the ‘Triple Triple’, three gold medals at three consecutive Olympic Games. Usain is a winner of eleven World T&F Championships titles.

Usain created first world record in the 100m in 2008 by winning race in 9.72 secs. Usain has been awarded the Laureus World Sportsman four times and the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year six times.

3 - Vishal Sikka tendered resignation as MD and CEO of Infosys

Vishal Sikka has resigned as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Infosys. Sikka will now be the executive vice-chairman of the company. The board of the country’s second-largest software services company accepted the resignation of Sikka with immediate effect.

U B Pravin Rao has been appointed as the interim CEO. Rao is currently the Chief Operating Officer responsible for the entire portfolio of the company’s offerings.

4 - Chairman of the Railway Board Ashok Mittal resigned

The Chairman of the Railway Board Ashok Mittal has resigned from his post in the wake of number of train derailments in the country. He submitted his resignation to Union Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu.

Mittal was facing opposition after the Utkal Express derailment in Muzaffarnagar. Around 23 passengers died and over 60 sustained injuries when 14 coaches of the Utkal Express, which runs on the Puri-Haridwar-Kalinga route, derailed at Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar.

5 - Wayne Rooney retires from international football

Wayne Rooney

England footballer Wayne Rooney has announced retirement from international football. The 31-year old played 119 games in national colours out of which he captained 22 to score 53 goals.

Rooney is England's all-time leading goal scorer. He made his England debut in February 2003. His last international appearance was as the captain, which was in last November's 3-0 victory over Scotland at Wembley. He currently plays for Everton in the English premier League.
