Finding opposites of integers
The opposite of any integer ‘a’ is ‘−a’
Similarly, the opposite of any integer ‘−a’ is ‘−(−a)’ = ‘a’
So, for example, the opposite of any integer 37 is −37.
And the opposite of −81 is −(−81) = 81.
In this lesson, we find opposites of given integers
Find the opposite of the following integer:
−93
Solution
Step 1:
The opposite of a negative integer is a positive integer.
Step 2:
The opposite of the integer −93 is
−(−93) = 93 or +93.
Find the opposite of the following integer:
69
Solution
Step 1:
The opposite of a positive integer is a negative integer.
Step 2:
The opposite of the integer +69 is −69.
Find the opposite of the following integer:
− (−20)
Solution
Step 1:
The opposite of a positive integer is a negative integer.
