Excel is a powerful tool that is used by many people across various industries for data analysis and organization. One useful feature of Excel is the ability to create drop down lists, which can help streamline data entry and improve data consistency. In this tutorial, we will focus on how to create a drop down list from another drop down list in Excel. This technique can be especially useful when you want to limit the options available in a second drop down list based on the selection made in the first drop down list. By the end of this tutorial, you will have a better understanding of how to create and manage drop down lists in Excel, and how to link them together to create more advanced data entry forms.

Create A Drop Down List From Another Drop Down List

Here we will first name the list separately and use it to create the data validation list. So let us see a simple process to know how you can create a drop-down list from another drop-down list in Excel.

Step 1

First, select the range of cells, name them continents, and click enter.

Select cells > Name > Ok

Step 2

Then select the cells of the first row and name them with the titles of the rows. For example, Europe is in the first row.

Select cells > Name > Ok

Step 3

Then repeat the above step for all the rows.

Step 4

Now click on an empty cell, click on data, and select data validation. Then set allow to list and source to =Continent and clicked Ok to get the first drop-down list.

Empty cell > Data > Data Validation > List > Source > Ok.

Step 5

Again, click on an empty cell, click on data validation, change the allow to list setting, enter source as =INDIRECT($F$2) and click Ok. In the formula, F2 is the address of the first drop-down list.

Empty cell > Data > Data Validation > List > Formula > Ok.

Finally, we can see that the data validation lists will be created successfully.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, we have used a simple example to demonstrate how you can create a drop-down list from another drop-down list in Excel to highlight a particular set of data.
