A rectangle is $87\ cm$ long and $53\ cm$ broad. By how much will its area increase or decrease, if it is made $3\ cm$ longer and $3\ cm$ narrower?

Given: A rectangle is $87\ cm$ long and $53\ cm$ broad.

To do: To find how much will its area increase or decrease, if it is made $3\ cm$ longer and $3\ cm$ narrower.

Solution:

As given, Length of the rectangle $=87\ cm$

Breadth of the rectangle $=53\ cm$

Area of the rectangle $=87\times53=4,611\ cm^2$

If it is made $3\ cm$ longer and $3\ cm$ narrower:

New length of rectangle $=87+3=90\ cm$

New breadth of the rectangle $=53-3=50\ cm$

Area of the rectangle with new dimension$=90\times50=4,500\ cm^2$

The area decreased on changing the dimensions$=4611-4500=111\ cm^2$

Therefore, area will decrease $111\ cm^2$, if it is made $3\ cm$ longer and $3\ cm$ narrower.
