How is a Steroid harmful to your health?

What are steroids?

Steroids are the naturally occurring chemicals in the human body. Steroids decrease inflammation, suppress the body's immune system, block DNA from being made. Steroid medicines are man-made which are similar to those present in the body.

Types of steroids

  • Anabolic
  • Corticosteroids

The corticosteroids are the steroids prescribed by a doctor for chronic bronchitis and such inflammatory diseases. Whereas the anabolic steroids are proven to be more harmful.

The Anabolic steroids are actually the synthetic substitute for the male hormones (commonly known as testosterone).

How Do Anabolic Steroids Work?

Anabolic steroids help in stimulating the muscle tissue to GROW at a faster pace in response to the workout by mimicking the effect of the natural testosterone on the body. The Anabolic steroids can last in your body from a couple of days to even a year! Lately, the mass building or the Fat burning steroids have become popular because they claim to improve endurance and muscle mass. No research has been successful in proving that steroids improve a skill or athletic performance.

Common users of Anabolic steroids are

  • Bodybuilders
  • Athletes
  • People trying to recover from a severe injury.

Side Effects

There are a number of side effects for these Anabolic steroids, few of them are:

  • Acne
  • Premature balding
  • Sleeping problems
  • Aggression
  • High blood pressure
  • Risk of heart disease is increased
  • May cause cancer.

5 Reasons why you should avoid using steroids for muscle building

  • Steroids are addictive − Regular use of steroids makes us depend on it. Just like any drug habit, it is hard to come out of it. There are a lot of withdrawal symptoms too.

  • Steroids cause hormonal imbalance − Especially in teens who already go through a lot of hormonal imbalance. This leads to the next reason.

  • Steroids can give you mood swings − They are capable of turning a calm mannered person into a rage monster in split seconds due to the hormonal imbalance. Generally known as the "Roid rage".

  • Steroids are harmful to health − Usage of steroids regularly can lead to liver and kidney problems, viral infections (as the immunity diminishes), strokes and so on.

  • Steroids are illegal − People don’t seem to be affected by this but they’re illegal if not prescribed by a pharmacist. One can end up in jail for up to 5 years by possessing such steroids.
