What are the differences between WiFi Extender and WiFi Booster?

Let us understand the concepts of Wifi extender and Wifi booster before learning the differences between them.

Wi-Fi Extender

A Wi-Fi repeater, extender, or booster all are devices which are used to forward wireless signals from the router that covers a larger area like multiple floors of a house. A Wi-Fi extender, also called a wireless network extender or wired-wireless network extender, varies with a small difference.

The Wi-Fi device uses both wired and wireless technologies to bring a wireless signal to an area of the home where network coverage has been weak. It enables all wireless devices within the expanded coverage area to connect to the internet or similar wireless network.

It is a unique solution which works by pulling in an existing weak Wi-Fi from the transmitter. It amplifies before broadcasting the transmission to more spaces wherever needed. The WiFi signals efficiently extend the current Wi-Fi network in the process reaching multiple floors, corners in a building and even your yard.

Advantages

The advantages of Wi-Fi extender are as follows −

  • Better Coverage in wide open area
  • It is easy to set-up
  • We can reuse the existing router
  • Multiple users can connect

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of W-Fi extender are as follows −

  • Poor signal
  • Lower speed
  • Incompatibility issues
  • Compatibility with future Wi-Fi Standards is difficult.

Wi-Fi Booster

It is also called a signal booster. This Booster is a device which helps extend the reach of WiFi signals to extend WiFi coverage. Improving the WiFi coverage helps us to eliminate dead spots in our home and improves the Internet.

Types of Wi-Fi Boosters

The different types of wired and wireless WiFi booster are as follows −

  • Wireless repeaters
  • Wireless range extenders
  • Wireless network extenders
  • MoCA adapters
  • Mesh Wi-Fi

Advantages

The advantages of Wi-Fi booster are as follows −

  • Adds WiFi signal coverage to homes
  • Cost effective
  • Works with regular router

The disadvantage of a wi-fi booster is that it is half the bandwidth.
