Acidified water is electrolyzed by using carbon electrodes. What is produced at: (a) positive carbon electrode? (b) negative carbon electrode?
(a) At the positive carbon electrode, oxygen gas is produced.
(b) At the negative carbon electrode, hydrogen gas is produced.
Explanation
During electrolysis of acidified water using carbon electrodes, $O\ ^{2-}$ ions are oxidized at the positive carbon electrode (anode), and thus oxygen gas is liberated at anode. Whereas, $H^+$ ions are reduced at the negative carbon electrode (cathode), and thus hydrogen gas is liberated at cathode.
