What is carbon monoxide? How is it useful?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless gas formed by the incomplete combustion of fuels. When people are exposed to CO gas, the CO molecules will displace the oxygen in their bodies and lead to poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a very important industrial compound.
In the form of producer gas or water gas, it is widely used as a fuel in industrial operations.
The gas is also used as an effective reducing agent.
Packaged carbon monoxide is used in a variety of industries for a wide range of applications including:
Metal Fabrication: Used in fuel gas mixtures with hydrogen and other gases for industrial and domestic heating.
Chemicals: In the manufacture of a variety of chemicals such as acids, esters and alcohols.
