In the electrolysis of acidified water:
  1. Name the gas collected at (i) anode, and (ii) cathode
  2. Why is the volume of gas collected at one electrode double than that at the other electrode?
  3. What would happen if dilute sulphuric acid is not added to water?

(a) At the cathode, H2 (hydrogen gas) is evolved and at the anode, O2 (oxygen gas) is evolved.

(b) At the cathode, H+ ion takes two electrons to convert itself into H2gas. 2 moles of Hgives 1 mole of H2.
2H+ (aq ) + 2e→ H2 (g)

At the anode, OHion releases two electrons to convert into water and O2. 2 mole OH- gives 0.5 mole O2, i.e why the volume of one gas collected at one electron is double of another.

(c) Dilute Sulphuric Acid is added to ionize water so that it conducts electricity as the distilled water is a non-conductor of electricity.
