What is a homologous series of carbon compounds?

Homologous series refers to the series representing a family of compounds in increasing order having the same functional group, and the successive members differ by CH2 unit or 14 mass unit: for example, the homologous series of alcohols are given below:-

Methanol (CH3OH)
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH)
Propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH)
Butanol (CH3CH2CH2CH2OH)
