# How To Count Number Of Lines (Line Breaks) In A Cell In Excel

Excel is a powerful tool for managing and analyzing data, and it's used by millions of people around the world. One of the most common tasks in Excel is to count the number of lines or line breaks in a cell. This is useful when you're working with text that spans multiple lines, such as addresses or multi-paragraph descriptions.

In this tutorial, we will guide you step-by-step on how to count the number of lines in a cell in Excel using different methods. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced user, you'll learn how to use Excel's built-in functions and formulas to quickly and accurately count the number of lines in your data. So, let's get started and learn how to count the number of lines in a cell in Excel.

## Count Number Of Lines (Line Breaks) In A Cell

Here, we will first get one result using the formula, then use the auto-fill handle to complete the task. So let us see a simple process to know how you can count the number of lines (line breaks) in a cell in Excel.

### Step 1

Consider an Excel sheet where the cells contain data in multiple lines, as shown below.

First click on an empty cell, in our case cell B2, and enter the formula as =LEN(A2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2, CHAR(10), ""))+1 and click Enter to get the first result. In the formula, A2 is the address of the cell containing data.

Empty cell > Formula > Enter.

### Step 2

Now to fill all the values, drag them down from the first cell using the auto-fill handle, and our final result will be similar to the below image.

Note −

The above-used formula will display the result as one for an empty cell. We can use formula as =LEN(A2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2, CHAR(10), ""))+(LEN(A2)>1) if the range of cells contain empty cells to avoid this problem.

## Conclusion

In this tutorial, we used a simple example to demonstrate how you can count the number of lines (line breaks) in a cell in Excel to highlight a particular set of data.
