Count Number Of Lines (Line Breaks) In A Cell
Here, we will first get one result using the formula, then use the auto-fill handle to complete the task. So let us see a simple process to know how you can count the number of lines (line breaks) in a cell in Excel.
Step 1
Consider an Excel sheet where the cells contain data in multiple lines, as shown below.
First click on an empty cell, in our case cell B2, and enter the formula as =LEN(A2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2, CHAR(10), ""))+1 and click Enter to get the first result. In the formula, A2 is the address of the cell containing data.
Empty cell > Formula > Enter.
Step 2
Now to fill all the values, drag them down from the first cell using the auto-fill handle, and our final result will be similar to the below image.
Note −
The above-used formula will display the result as one for an empty cell. We can use formula as =LEN(A2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2, CHAR(10), ""))+(LEN(A2)>1) if the range of cells contain empty cells to avoid this problem.
