Simple Healthy Tips for Software Engineers
Just think for a moment: Do you work to live, or live to work? Software engineers have long working hours who usually sits in front of computers and have no time to take care of health. The lifestyle and working conditions of software engineers are often stressful and also they stay motionless for hours!
By following these simple tips, Software Engineers can minimize ill effects of stress and stay healthy.
Get Enough Sleep
If you are not getting adequate sleep, then you will feel drowsy during the day, unable to concentrate on simple tasks and feel irritable. Try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every day. Getting enough sleep isn’t only about total hours of sleep. It’s also important to get good quality sleep on a regular schedule so you feel rested when you wake up. Ensure that your bedroom is quite and relaxing. Avoid keeping Televisions, Computer, gadgets in your bedroom and follow regular bedtimes and wake times.
Drink Hot Water
One BASIC thing most of the software engineers forget is that their body needs one very important element – WATER! Water helps flush our systems of waste products and toxins, yet many people go through life dehydrated—causing tiredness, low energy, and headaches. Drink sufficient amount of water at least 2-3 bottles of water during your working hours. It is preferable if you drink hot water. This simple thing can have a very positive effect on your health. It purifies your body and helps remove unwanted properties as well.
Manage Your Social Network Addiction
Try to spend lesser time on Social Networking Sites. Researchers say that an increasingly high number of people prefer to spend time surfing the internet and spending time on social networking sites instead of pursuing a hobby.
Ask yourself how much time you spend on networking sites every week and whether it is worth it. Live life in the real world instead of the e-world. Opt for a hobby, which will give you a chance to enjoy, learn something new and meet new people.
Regular Exercise
It’s very common to see neck and back related problem among software engineers. A brisk walk for 30 minutes every day in your neighborhood will do you a whole lot of good. Make sure that you exercise your neck often and start doing yoga, meditation, walking, cycling, swimming or even dancing which are great stress busters also.
Focus on your Food
Most of the young techies are eating food while texting on the mobile phones or working on the laptop. If you focus only on your food then you’ll eat only as much as your body requires.
Keep away from fast-food which usually does a lot of harm to the body. It can be unhygienic and also high on unhealthy fats like trans-fats. Also, Soft drinks are complete garbage even the diet drinks are proving to not be good. Instead of these harmful drinks, choose to refresh yourself with a glass of water, buttermilk or lemonade.
Quit Smoking
Smoking is one of the biggest issues affecting your health. To quit smoking successfully you need encouragement and support from your doctor, family, friends, and coworkers. A doctor will help you tailor an approach that suits you best. Being busy will help you keep your mind off smoking and distract you from cravings. Look around for other activities that you enjoy and that will allow you to laugh – for example, improvisation, acting, movies, reading, singing, music, etc.
Follow a Healthy Diet
Healthy eating is not about harsh dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your outlook, and stabilizing your mood. Make sure to add green leafy vegetables to your diet. They are a rich source of proteins, iron, calcium and fiber. Ensure that your body receives the required amount of proteins daily. Eat smaller portions of high-calorie dishes and avoid reaching out for snacks while watching TV. Include more vegetables and fruits in your daily diet.
Rule for Reducing Computer Eyestrain
The primary measure to reduce dry eyes and eye strain is by blinking. Blink your eyes at regular interval of time. Follow the 20-20-20 rule. After every 20 minutes of work, look 20 feet away from the computer screen and blink 20 times. Also, lubricate your eyes at regular interval to avoid dryness of eyes. Use lubricating eye drops in both the eyes before every session on the computer. Consult your eye surgeon before using any eye drops. The screen should be just as bright as your office lights, and should not appear to glow.
One thing to remember is that any changes need to be sustainable. Introduce changes over time and you’re more likely to stick to them.
