When the ovary turns into a fruit, the petals and sepals fall off, then is the fruit protected?
Sepals and Petals wither and fall off after fertilization of the flower because they are no longer needed by the plant. The petals only serve the function to attract pollinators and protect the ovary, which is not needed after the formation of zygote inside the ovule. The sepals typically function as protection for the flower bud, and as a support for the petals when it blooms, but when the ovary develops into the fruit, it develops a thick wall called pericarp that protects the fruit, after which sepals are no longer needed.
