Why the ripening of fruit is a chemical change?

A chemical change is a permanent change in which the chemical composition of a substance is changed and a new substance is formed.

Eg: burning of magnesium ribbon

Properties of chemical change are as follows: 1. Chemical changes are irreversible. The original form of the matter cannot be attained. 2. It is a permanent change and one or more new substance is formed. 3. During a chemical change, energy is produced in the form of heat, light or sound, while during a chemical reaction, energy is either absorbed or released. 4. Chemical change causes changes in the physical and chemical properties of the substance.

Ripening of fruits is a chemical change because of the following reasons-

During ripening, the pigment present in the skin of the fruit changes, and this can not be reversed back. Hence, it is Irreversible.

It is a chemical change as once a fruit ripens it cannot turn raw again. Hence, it is a permanent change.

The properties of the raw fruit are different from the properties of the ripe fruit. Hence, a new substance is formed.
