What is tsunami?

The word ‘Tsunami’ is taken from the Japanese word which means “Harbour Wave”. It is a chain of fast-moving waves in the ocean which is caused by the powerful volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and other underwater explosions.

About 80% of tsunamis occurs in the Pacific Ocean. The speed of Tsunami waves depends on the ocean depth and it may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, but slows down as it approaches to shallow water.
