Find the HCF of the following pair of numbers: 56 and 88

Given: 56 and 88.

To find: Here we have to find the HCF of the given numbers.

Solution:

Using Euclid's division algorithm to find HCF:

Using Euclid’s lemma to get:
  • $88\ =\ 56\ \times\ 1\ +\ 32$

Now, consider the divisor 56 and the remainder 32, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $56\ =\ 32\ \times\ 1\ +\ 24$

Now, consider the divisor 32 and the remainder 24, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $32\ =\ 24\ \times\ 1\ +\ 8$

Now, consider the divisor 24 and the remainder 8, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $24\ =\ 8\ \times\ 3\ +\ 0$

The remainder has become zero, and we cannot proceed any further.

Therefore the HCF of 88 and 56 is the divisor at this stage, i.e., 8.

So, HCF of 56 and 88 is 8.
