Find the HCF of the following pair of numbers:
155 and 1385

Given: 155 and 1385.

To find: Here we have to find the HCF of the given numbers.

Solution:

Using Euclid's division algorithm to find HCF:

Using Euclid’s lemma to get:
  • $1385\ =\ 155\ \times\ 8\ +\ 145$

Now, consider the divisor 155 and the remainder 145, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $155\ =\ 145\ \times\ 1\ +\ 10$

Now, consider the divisor 145 and the remainder 10, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $145\ =\ 10\ \times\ 14\ +\ 5$

Now, consider the divisor 10 and the remainder 5, and apply the division lemma to get:
  • $10\ =\ 5\ \times\ 2\ +\ 0$

The remainder has become zero, and we cannot proceed any further.

Therefore the HCF of 1385 and 155 is the divisor at this stage, i.e., 5.

So, HCF of 155 and 1385 is 5.
