A scuba diver dove 80 feet deep into the water. After that, he swam towards the water surface at the rate of 3 feet per minute. If the water surface is represented by zero, what is the position of the diver from the surface of the water after 20 minutes?
Given: A scuba diver dove 80 feet deep into the water. After that, he swam towards the water surface at the rate of 3 feet per minute
To do: Find the position of the diver from the surface of the water after 20 minutes
Solution:
The scuba diver dives to a depth of $-80$ feet first.
Then he rises to the surface of the water (represented by 0 feet) at the rate of 3 feet per minute.
After 20 minutes, the scuba diver has risen to the surface by a distance of $3 \times 20 = + 60 $ft above from where had dived.
So the position of the diver from the surface of water after 20 minutes = $-80 + 60 = -20$ ft Answer
The second option of -20 is CORRECT
