A river $3\ m$ deep and $40\ m$ wide is flowing at the rate of $2\ km$ per hour. How much water will fall into the sea in a minute?

Given:

A river $3\ m$ deep and $40\ m$ wide is flowing at the rate of $2\ km$ per hour.

To do:

We have to find the volume of water that will fall into the sea in a minute.

Solution:

Speed of water in a river $= 2\ km/hr$

Length of the flow of water in 1 minute $=\frac{2 \times 1000}{60}$

$=\frac{100}{3} \mathrm{~m}$

Breadth of the river $(b)=40 \mathrm{~m}$

Depth of the river $(h)=3 \mathrm{~m}$

Volume of the water $=l b h$

$=\frac{100}{3} \times 40 \times 3$

$=4000 \mathrm{~m}^{3}$

$=4000 \times 1000\ l$

$=4000000$ litres
