How can I remove dandruff from my hair?

Dandruff is a common problem that prevails all over the world. The dead skin cells on the scalp that sometimes appear like white flakes are called Dandruff. Dandruff makes the skin itchy and irritating, with a great potential to further spread from hair to the eyebrows and eyelashes. It could indeed become the worst enemy of your skin.

But first, let’s have a glimpse of what causes dandruff.

  • Dry Skin− People with dry skin often face dandruff problem because of the combined effect of cold winter air and overheated rooms.

  • Seborrheic Dermatitis − The condition is linked to a fungus called Malassezia, which perches on the scalp and enjoys the oil treat by follicles secretion.

  • Sensitivity to Hair Products − Some people have a kind of skin that is sensitive to certain hairs products, resulting in the red, itchy, scaling scalp.

  • Eczema − It’s a skin condition that often causes dandruff in the people having it.

  • Neurological Illnesses − Some neurological illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease are also responsible for causing dandruff.

However, there are some highly effective ways to prevent dandruff.

Tea Tree Oil

  • Adding a few drops of tree oil to your hair shampoo could prove to be a great remedy to get rid of dandruff.

  • You can also tea tree oil with coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, carrier oil, etc. , and apply the mixture gently on your scalp right before going to bed.

  • Tea tree oil contains terpinen-4-ol, which has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that help treat dandruff and scalp problems.

Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Apple Cider Vinegar is a long used and proven therapy for dandruff. Also known as ACV, the vinegar has superb anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It just not helps remove dandruff but stops recurrence by killing excess bacteria and yeast-like fungus.

  • It’s very easy to use Apple Cider Vinegar therapy. Take a bowl and pour some apple cider vinegar into it. Now, soak a cotton ball into it and use it to apply ACV gently on your scalp. Use a warm towel to cover your hair as it helps open the pores on the scalp. Rinse off your hair after an hour. This procedure should be followed twice a week for one month to produce satisfactory results.


  • Egg yolks also have high efficacy in treating dandruff. Amino acids in egg yolks battle dandruff well. Make a mixture of two egg yolks and juice of one small lemon. Apply this mixture on your scalp and leave it for five minutes. Then, wash your hair with water and a mild shampoo.

  • You can go for egg oil if the smell of eggs annoys you. The only pain, in this case, is to leave the egg oil on your scalp overnight after massaging it on your hair for 10 minutes. Three months of egg oil regime is good enough to keep dandruff at bay.

Baking soda and Water

  • Baking soda is very useful in treating seborrhoea dermatitis. Make a fine paste of baking soda and water and apply it on the scalp for 10 minutes. Baking soda treats fungal infections and lets the hair produce natural oils.

  • You can also make a paste of baking soda and lemon to balance the pH of your scalp. Lemon has good acidic content to improve the effectiveness of baking soda in treating dandruff and hair problems.


  • Aspirin is also widely used to cure dandruff. The salicylic acid content in Aspirin works brilliantly to treat fungal and bacterial infections.

  • Crush two aspirins into powder and mix it with your normal dose of shampoo. Let the mixture stay for two minutes each time you shampoo your hair and then, wash it off using a plain shampoo. It helps get rid of dandruff fast.
