Write a short note on 'Chipko Andolan'(Hug the trees Movement).


Chipko Movement is started in the 1970s as a non-violent movement towards the protection and conservation of trees and forests. The term "Chipko Movement" is originated from the word embrace that means to hug the trees.

During Chipko Andolan, the local people participated in the movement for the conservation of forests. It originated in the remote village of Reni, in the Garhwal region. In this movement, when the woodcutters or workers of the contractor proceed to cut the trees in the absence of the men of the village, all women hug the tree trunks with their arms, to save the trees from destroying.  It is an example to show the participation of local people towards the management of forests is "Chipko Andolan".
