What is biomagnification?

Biomagnification or biological magnification, also termed as bioamplification, is the process under which the harmful toxic substances (such as pesticides) entered the food chain and get accumulated in the tissues of tolerant organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain. The toxin gets amplifies as it moves over the food chain.

For example, in the food chain of Grass---Goat---Human, the harmful or toxic substances like pesticides, present in the grass or sprayed by the farmers on grains entered into the body of the goat as it eats the grass or grains.

After this, the toxic substances entered into the human body when the goat is consumed by humans. Hence, the concentration of the harmful substances at every trophic level gets magnified.
