What is algebra?

Algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols; it is a unifying thread of almost all of mathematics.

Arithmetic is the manipulation of numbers through basic math functions. Algebra introduces a variable, which stands for an unknown number or can be substituted for an entire group of numbers.

A variable is an important concept of algebra. It can be an object or a letter that represents a number of things. We use variables to represent unknowns, to represent quantities that vary, and to generalize properties.

Algebra helps in solving the mathematical equations and to derive the unknown quantities, like the bank interest, proportions, percentages.
