What happens when an acid reacts with a base? Explain by taking the example of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Give equation of the chemical equation which takes place. What is the chemical name of such a reaction?
When an acid reacts with a base, salt and water is formed. When hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, they neutralise each other to form sodium chloride (NaCl) and water(H2O).
The equation can be given as:
$NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) →NaCl(aq) + H_2O(l)$
Such reactions are known as Neutralisation reaction.
