(a)What happens when calcium reacts with chlorine? Write an equation for the reaction which takes place.
(b)What happens when magnesium reacts with very dilute nitric acid? Write an equation for the reaction involved.

(a) Calcium reacts vigorously with chlorine to form ionic chloride called calcium chloride.
The reaction is given as:
$Ca(s) + Cl_2(g) → CaCl_2(s)$

(b) Magnesium reacts with very dilute nitric acid to form magnesium nitrate and hydrogen gas is liberated.
The reaction is given as:
$Mg(s) + 2HNO_3(aq) → Mg(NO_3)_2(aq) + H_2(g)$
