State three reasons why you think air is a mixture and water is a compound.

Air is a mixture because:
  1. It contains two or more pure substances.
  2. Air can be separated into simpler substances by physical processes.
  3. The composition of air is not fixed.
Water is a compound because:
  1. Water cannot be separated into its constituents i.e., hydrogen and oxygen by any physical methods.
  2. Properties of water are entirely different from those of its constituents.
  3. The composition of water is fixed.
  4. Its constituents are present in a fixed proportion by mass. Water has a definite formula (H2O).
