Given:

In a class, there are 18 girls and 16 boys. The class teacher wants to choose one pupil for class monitor.

She writes the name of each pupil on a card and puts them into a basket and mixes thoroughly.

A child is asked to pick one card from the basket.

To do:

We have to find the probability that the name written on the card is the name of a girl.

Solution:

Number of boys $=16$

Number of girls $=18$

This implies,

The total number of cards $=16+18=34$

The total number of possible outcomes $n=34$.

Total number of favourable outcomes(girls) $=18$.

We know that,

Probability of an event $=\frac{Number\ of\ favourable\ outcomes}{Total\ number\ of\ possible\ outcomes}$

Therefore,

Probability that the name written on the card is the name of a girl $=\frac{18}{34}$

$=\frac{9}{17}$

The probability that the name written on the card is the name of a girl is $\frac{9}{17}$.
