How To Do Like Fractions

Solution:

Like fractions are those fractions whose denominators are same or equal

Examples: $\frac{1}{2}$,$\frac{3}{2}$, $\frac{7}{2}$ etc are like fractions.

Like fractions can be easily added and subtracted

Unlike fractions are those which have different denominators

Examples: $\frac{1}{2}$, $\frac{1}{4}$, $\frac{1}{23}$ and so on

Unlike fractions can be converted into like fractions

We take the LCM of the denominators of the unlike fractions

and make the denominators of the unlike fractions equal to this LCM.

Example:

$\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{3}$ are unlike fractions. LCM of 2 and 3 is 6

We make the denominators of these unlike fraction equal to LCM 6 as follows

$\frac{1\times3}{2\times3}$, $\frac{1\times2}{3\times2}$

or $\frac{3}{6}$, $\frac{2}{6}$....so unlike fraction $\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{3}$ have become like fractions

$\frac{3}{6}$ and $\frac{2}{6}$
