Give reasons for the following observations:

(a) The element carbon forms a very large number of compounds.
(b) Air holes of a gas burner have to be adjusted when the heated vessels get blackened by the flame.
(c) Use of synthetic detergents causes pollution of water.

(a) Carbon forms a large number of compounds because carbon is tetravalent and small in size. Hence, it can form stable covalent bonds (catenation).

(b) Air holes of the gas burner have to be adjusted frequently so that air can pass through and complete combustion can take place. Incomplete combustion of fuel results in the formation of soot which blackens the vessel.

(c) Use of synthetic detergents causes pollution of water as they are non-biodegradable and hence, cannot be broken down easily.
