Why does carbon atom forms a large of compounds?


Carbon has a unique property by which it can form long chains known as catenation. It can form many different compounds because each carbon atom can form four chemical bonds to other atoms.
Also, the carbon atom is small in size to fit in comfortably as parts of a very large molecule.
