A substance X is added to LPG cylinders while filling so as to make the detection of leakage of LPG from the cylinder easy.
(a) Name the substance X.
(b) How does substance X make the detection of leakage of LPG easy?
(a) Substance X is ethyl mercaptan (C2H5SH).
(b) Ethyl mercaptan has a foul or pungent smell and hence easy to detect.
Explanation
LPG is basically propane and butane, and it is completely odourless in its natural state and is made from refining petroleum or natural gas. It is kept in a liquid state by using high pressure.
The smell that we notice while filling LPG cylinders and during leakage, it actually comes from an entirely different agent, called Ethyl Mercaptan.
Ethyl Mercaptan is a clear colourless liquid, with a chemical odorant, which is added to the LPG when it leaves the main storage terminals so that the leakage of LPG can be detected easily.
