Why is the leakage of LPG detected easily although it is odourless? State the steps to be taken in case its leakage is detected in the kitchen.

Although Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is odourless, but still get detected easily, because of the presence of pungent or foul-smelling ethyl mercaptan (C2H5SH), which is added to it, so that it can be detected easily when there is a leakage.

The steps to be taken when leakage of LPG is detected in the kitchen are as follows:
1. Lighted match stick and other burning material should be kept away.
2. The doors and windows should be opened at once so as to allow the gas to escape.
3. The source of gas leakage or damage should be checked and then treat it right with the help of a gas mechanic.

Explanation
LPG is basically propane and butane, and it is completely odourless in its natural state and is made from refining petroleum or natural gas. It is kept in a liquid state by using high pressure.
The smell that we notice while filling LPG cylinders and during leakage, it actually comes from an entirely different agent, called Ethyl Mercaptan
Ethyl Mercaptan is a clear colourless liquid, with a chemical odorant, which is added to the LPG when it leaves the main storage terminals so that the leakage of LPG can be detected easily.
