How to make all rows same height or columns same width in Excel?

In this article, we will discuss two things – how to make all rows of the same height and how to make all columns of same width. A spreadsheet in Excel is made of up of horizontal rows and vertical columns. The height of all the rows or individual rows can be changed as per the requirement. For example, rows having headings usually have more height than other rows holding data values. Similarly, width of some columns can be changed according to the size of the headings. This can be seen from the image below.

There are two ways to make all rows of the same height, or all columns of the same width as mentioned below.

  • By using Format feature.

  • Using Kutools.

Example 1

In this example, we will see how the Format feature of Excel can be used to make all rows the same height or all columns the same width.

Let us look at the steps to make all rows of the same height.

Step 1

Let us consider a blank spreadsheet as shown in the image. This spreadsheet has an unequal height of all the rows as seen from the image.

Step 2

Select all the rows using Ctrl + A shortcut. Then click on the Home tab.

Step 3

In the Cells section, click on Format.

Step 4

A list having all the options will appear. Select the Row Height option.

Step 5

A dialog box will appear. Enter a value in the text box for row height. Then click on the OK button.

Step 6

All the rows will become the same size as specified in the text box as shown.

As seen from the output image, all the rows have the same height.

Let us look at the steps to make all columns of the same width.

Step 1

Consider a blank spreadsheet. This blank spreadsheet has unequal widths of all the columns as seen from the image.

Step 2

Select all the columns using the shortcut, Ctrl + A. Click on the Home tab.

Step 3

In the Cells section, click on Format option.

Step 4

A list of options will appear. Select the “Column Width..” option.

Step 5

A dialog box will appear. Enter a value for column width in the blank text box. Click on the OK button.

Step 6

All the columns will become the same width as specified in the text box.

As seen from the output image, all the columns have become the same width.

Example 2: By using Kutools

In this example, we will see how a third-party utility tool named Kutools can be used to make all rows the same height or make all columns the same width. Before proceeding towards the steps, Kutools must be integrated with Excel. First, download Kutools and then install it. Once Kutools is installed, it will automatically be integrated into Excel. A tab named Kutools will appear along with the other tabs.

Now, let us look at the steps using Kutools.

Step 1 − Consider a blank spreadsheet with all rows having unequal heights and all columns having unequal widths.

Step 2 − Click on Kutools tab.

Step 3 − In the Editing section, click on Format.

Step 4 − A list of options will appear. Select Adjust Cell Size.

Step 5 − In the Units section, select Centimeters. Enter values for Row and Column respectively. Click on OK button.

Output

As seen from the output image, all the cells become of uniform size.

Conclusion

We can also change the height of rows or widths of columns manually by dragging it. But this method is suitable only when a few rows or columns need to be resized. This method is time-consuming and tiring. Hence, to make this task automated, the two examples described in this article will come in handy.
