Go Cashless – No Internet (no signal) No Problem ???


The cashless world after demonetization is no longer imagination for all of us, we might get there sooner than we think. While the idea of a cashless society is appealing, the challenges of implementation are huge.

Today various modes of digital payments for cashless transactions are available such as Internet Banking and Mobile banking but these cashless solutions are heavily dependent on active internet connection and some people find it difficult to pay digitally due to poor or no internet connectivity. In this article, I will cover some of few options viable payment options which can be leveraged even without active internet connection.

USSD Way of Payment

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data popularly called USSD, has been built by National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP). The USSD works on the voice network which means we can use it on a basic mobile handset (feature phone) and don’t even require an internet connection. Checking your bank account balance is as simple as checking your phone’s prepaid balance.

USSD is available in 11 regional languages. You can assess USSD in the desired language using these shortcodes. Hindi (*99*22#), Marathi (*99*28#), Bengali (*99*29#), Punjabi (*99*30#), Kannada (*99*26#), Gujarati (*99*27#), Tamil (*99*23#), Telugu (*99*24#), Malayalam (*99*25#), Oriya (*99*32#) and Assamese (*99*31#).

How does USSD work?

Firstly, Link your mobile phone number to your bank account. You can even register multiple bank accounts with the same mobile phone number. Just dial *99# on your phone keypad.

You get a USSD message on your phone, asking for the first three letters of your bank such as for State Bank of India, you need to enter sbi or You could enter the first four letters of your IFSC code.

Then choose from available services such as Check your bank account balance, Mini statement, Send money using MMID, Send money using IFSC, Show MMID, Change MPIN….

For Fund Transfer –select MMID option. Then Enter the Payee’s mobile number, MMID, and the and theLastly, you will be asked to enter your MPIN and the last 4 digits of your account number.

A confirmation screen will appear showing success response.You have just transferred your money!.

USSD offers you three kinds of services −

Non-Financial Services

You can check your bank account balance, generate a mini statement, check your mobile money identifier popularly called MMID (very useful for mobile banking) and check your mobile PIN (m-PIN).

Financial Services

You can transfer money using the recipient’s (person you want to send money) IFSC code, mobile number, MMID and even Aadhaar number.

Value Added Services

You can check the status of the link between your Aadhaar and bank account.

Remember − this payment method can be used only for small value transactions up to Rs 5000 as per RBI guidelines i.e. the maximum amount you can transact each day is INR 5,000.

In a case of any complaints, you can contact your banks for transaction related bugs or TSP for network related bugs.

Paytm’s New Cashless without Internet Feature

While Paytm has, so far, been restricted to smart phone users, the digital wallet has now extended its services to feature phone users as well. This service is for existing Paytm Users that will enable feature phone and non-internet users to go cashless with Paytm.

Register Paytm on a Featured Phone?

  • You can register your mobile number with Paytm (via Android or iOS mobile app). Alternatively, use a friend or relative’s smartphone to do the same and don’t forget to log out.

  • You can then call at 1800 1800 1234 to set your 4 Digit Paytm PIN.

  • Then enter the recipient’s mobile number, amount and their Paytm PIN to successfully transfer the money from their Paytm wallet to another Paytm wallet without a smartphone or active internet connection.

Now, you don’t need internet ot go CASHLESS!. Every Indian go cashless without the internet connection and transferring money is really simple. Be Wise, Be rich!
