Difference between OLED and QLED


OLED and QLED are modern display technologies used in a variety of electronic devices, such as TVs, monitors, laptop screens, smartphones, etc. However, they are completely different from each other in several aspects like technology, characteristics, performance, viewing angles, and more.

The most fundamental difference between OLED and QLED is in their display technology, i.e. OLED display uses organic semiconductor materials to emit light and display images on the screen, while QLED display uses LED backlights and quantum dots to produce images on the screen.

What is OLED?

OLED is the acronym for Organic Light Emitting Diode. OLED is a modern display technology used in a wide range of electronic display devices, such as TVs, monitors, laptops, smartphones, bulletin boards, stadium screens, etc.

OLED displays consist of organic semiconductor compounds that emit a bright light on the passage of electric current through them, and hence it is termed as OLED. In OLED displays, a thin layer of organic semiconductor material is placed between two conducting electrodes which produces a bright light that illuminate the screen on the passage of electric current through the organic material.

The primary advantages of OLED displays include better picture quality, relatively wider viewing angles, greater flexibility in design, compact size, faster response time, and low power consumption. OLED displays have relatively shorter lifespan due to higher chances of image burn-in effect.

What is QLED?

QLED is the acronym for Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode. QLED is another modern display technology used in several electronic devices like TVs, monitors, etc.

QLED displays combines two different technologies namely, quantum dots and LED backlight system. This combination improves the picture quality and color reproduction, resulting in the enhancement of overall performance of the display device.

Quantum dots are nothing but very small semiconductor nanocrystals, typically made up of indium phosphide or cadmium selenide. These quantum dots can emit light of a certain wavelength when either energized by an electric current or exposed to an external source of light. The size of the quantum dots determines the wavelength of the emitted light.

In a QLED display, a layer of the quantum dots is placed between the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel and the LED backlighting system. The light produced by the LED backlight panel illuminate the quantum dots to produce a light of a certain wavelength to display highly pure colors on the screen. The LCD panel controls the amount of light to create the final image on the screen.

The major advantages of QLED display technology, include enhanced color accuracy, high brightness levels, improved contrast ratios, wider viewing angles, and higher energy efficiency. Also, QLED displays more affordable than OLED displays.
