What is NGN?

NGN stands for Next Generation Network. It defines the evolution and migration of hooked and mobile network frameworks from distinct proprietary networks to assemble networks depending on IP. It is accepted to be an interworking environment of heterogeneous networks of wired and wireless access networks, PSTN, satellites, transmission, etc.

Next-generation networks are used to send all types of services and data such as voice data/calls, audio data/calls, and multimedia data including videos. All types of such data are encapsulated in data packet design.

An NGN is simply based on Internet technology, such as MPLS and IP. It uses H.323 protocol as its major element. Softswitch is the essential device used in NGN and it is only created for voice applications.

Features of NGN

There are various features of NGN which are as follows −

  • NGN operates on Packet-based transferring.

  • There is an automatic partition of control services between bearer capabilities, call/session, and application/service.

  • Decoupling of service provision from the network and provision of the open interface is also accessible under NGN.

  • It provides a broad range of services, applications, and structures based on service building blocks.

  • The network has Broadband capacity with end-to-end QoS and transparency.

  • This network also has a nature of interworking with the legacy system by the way of open interfaces.

  • It supports the benefit of general mobility.

  • It supports unrestricted access by clients to various service providers.

  • It also supports a variety of identification designs that can be resolved to IP addresses for the goals of routing in the IP network.

  • It is a collection of Unified service features for the same services as recognized by the user.

Elements of NGN

There are various elements of NGN which are as follows −

  • Soft Switch − A Soft Switch (software switch) is a device-independent software platform created to simplify telecommunication services in an IP network. Therefore, it is the mechanism and not a box. It is the main element in the entire network which implements the function of establishing the call and sending the voice media. It is also referred to as ‘Call Agent’ or ‘Media Gateway Controller’.

  • Signaling Gateway − The Signaling Gateway implements the work of sending all the signals needed during call processing. It connects with the Soft Switch via Signal Transport Protocol (SIGTRAN) which is similar to CCS#7 protocols used in traditional frameworks.

  • Media Gateways − Media Gateways are defined into Trunk Media Gateways (TMGs) and Access Media Gateways (AMGs). This facilitates Customer Equipment (CE) and supports the edge functionality.
