What are the major parts of the brain? Mention the functions of different parts?

The major parts of the brain are Forebrain, Midbrain, and Hindbrain.

The Forebrain consists of the cerebrum; Midbrain is composed of the Hypothalamus; and Hindbrain is composed of the cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata.

The forebrain is the main thinking part of the brain.

Four major functions of this part are given below:

  1. It helps in hearing, smelling, and seeing.
  2. It stores information.
  3. It plays an important role in the movement of voluntary muscles.
  4. The sensation of feeling of hunger or satiety is provided by this area.

The function of the hypothalamus constituting the midbrain is to control sleep and the rhythmic cycle known as the circadian cycle. It also controls the hunger and thirsty centers.

The parts of the hindbrain and their function are given below:

Parts of hind-brainFunction
pons
It is a relay center. It is also the pneumotaxic area of the respiratory center.
cerebellum
It maintains equilibrium and also coordinates muscular activities.
medulla oblongata
It regulates several basic functions of the autonomic nervous system, including respiration, cardiac function, vasodilation, and reflexes like vomiting, coughing, sneezing, and swallowing.
