What is the meaning of food chain?

Food chain is a network or links starting from produces and ending with decomposers. Food chain shows the relationship between organisms through the food they consume.

Example:

The forest food chain comprises of producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, scavengers, and decomposers.

The producers such as trees, shrubs and plants convert solar energy into the chemical energy by photosynthesis.

The Primary Consumers such as the mice, squirrels and rabbits consume the plants hence known as herbivores.

The Secondary Consumers such as fox and hawk prey on primary consumers.

The Scavengers such as the turkey vulture and fox feed on the dead animals.

The Decomposers or Detrivores such as mushrooms, insects and microorganisms degrade the organic matter.
