What is Bone Marrow and what is its work ?

Bone marrow is a spongy tissue present in the center of some bones such as hip and thigh bones. It manufactures bone marrow stem cells.

There are two types of bone marrow such as Red bone marrow and Yellow bone marrow.

  • The Red bone marrow stem cells produce blood cells. Each type of blood cell made by the bone marrow has an important function. The Red blood cells (RBCs) carry oxygen to body tissues. Platelets help in blood clotting and stop bleeding. White Blood Cells (WBCs) fight infections.
  • Yellow bone marrow stores fats. The fats in yellow bone marrow are stored adipocytes. Whenever required this fat can be used as an energy source. Yellow bone marrow can be converted to red marrow to produce more blood cells when blood supply is extremely low.
