Villi are small, finger-like projections that extend into the lumen of the small intestine.

The structure of the small intestine is designed for the absorption of nutrients. It projects into the intestinal cavity greatly increases the internal surface area of the intestinal walls making available a greater surface area for absorption and adding digestive secretions that are known as chyme

The villi present in the small intestine absorbs about 2 gallons (7.5 litres) of fluid per day.
