How do we test for nutrients in our food?


Nutrients are essential components of food that are needed by our bodies such as carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins, water, and dietary fibers.

But how do we check the presence of nutrients in our food? We can test the presence of Fats, carbohydrates, proteins by conducting the following tests.

Carbohydrates Test

The main Carbohydrates found in our body are  Sugar and starch.

A small quantity of food to be tested is taken on a porcelain tile.

It is diluted with 2 drops of water.

2-3 drops of iodine solution are added to it.

The colour of the food item is observed. Blue-black colour indicates the presence of starch in the food.

Protein Test

A small quantity of food to be tested is taken.

The food is ground into a powder and put into a test tube.

Ten drops of water and two drops of copper sulphate solution are added into it.

The colour of the mixture is observed. Violet colour indicates the presence of proteins in the food.

Fat test

A small quantity of food to be tested is taken.

The food is wrapped in a small piece of paper and crushed.

The paper is unwrapped and dried by keeping it open to the sunlight for a while.

It will be observed that an oily patch has appeared on the paper that indicates the presence of fat in the food.
