How can you separate grains from stalk?

We separate grains from the stalk by threshing.

In this process, the stalks are beaten to free the grain seeds. It can be done manually or with the help of machines. A threshing machine is also known as a thresher. It is a piece of farm equipment that threshes grains, removes the seeds from the stalks, and husks them.

Principle:

The farmer, after harvesting, ties the stalks together to form bundles and then leaves the piles to dry in the sun. After completely drying the stalks, the farmer beats them against a hard floor to free the grains.

Advantage:

  • A thresher has made the process easier and less laborious.
  • It has reduced the workload of a farmer. Some thrashers, like the pedal-powered thrashers, are low-cost.
  • The farms have become more and more self-sufficient.

Disadvantage:

  • Earlier, the process of threshing was done by hand with flails. The women on the farms used to beat the dried stalks to free them from the grains. It was a laborious and lengthy process.
