(a) What is a reflex action? Explain with the help of an example.(b) Define reflex arc. Give the flow chart of a spinal reflex arc.(c) How are involuntary actions and reflex actions different from each other?
(a) Reflex action is an involuntary, rapid and automatic response in the body to a stimulus. If we see an intense beam of light we automatically blink our eyes.
For example, if we unknowingly touch a hot plate, we immediately move our hand away from it.
(b) Reflex arc is the path taken up by the nerve impulses during a reflex action.

(c) Difference between involuntary actions and reflex actions are as follows:
Involuntary actions | Reflex action |
1. All involuntary actions are not reflexes. | 1. All reflex actions are involuntary in nature. |
2. Involuntary actions are the normal actions given by the internal or external organs of the body, which do not need thinking and performed by us unknowingly. | 2. A reflex action is a sudden and autonomic response to a stimulus which is not under the voluntary control of the brain (involuntary). |
3. Example- Digestion and respiration. | 3. Example- Sneezing and Coughing. |
