(a) The yeast cells fail to multiply in water but they multiply rapidly in sugar solution. Give one reason for it.(b) Why does bread mould grow profusely on a moist slice of bread but not on a dry slice of bread?

(a) The yeast cells fail to multiply in water because, in water, the yeast cells do not get nutrients required for the growth and multiplication of cells.

While sugar solution provides nutrients to the yeast cells to produce bud-like outgrowth and undergo the process of asexual reproduction known as budding.

(b) Bread mould grows profusely on a moist slice of bread because moist bread provides both nutrients and moisture to the bread mould. Whereas a dry slice of bread provides only nutrients, but not water to the bread mould, therefore it does not grow.
