A patient in a hospital is given soup daily in a cylindrical bowl of diameter $7\ cm$. If the bowl is filled with soup to a height of $4\ cm$, how much soup the hospital has to prepare daily to serve 250 patients?
Given:
A patient in a hospital is given soup daily in a cylindrical bowl of diameter $7\ cm$.
The bowl is filled with soup to a height of $4\ cm$.
To do:
We have to find the volume of soup the hospital has to prepare daily to serve 250 patients.
Solution:
Diameter of the cylindrical bowl $= 7\ cm$
This implies,
Radius of the bowl $(r) =\frac{7}{2}\ cm$
Level of soup in the bowl $= 4\ cm$
Therefore,
The volume of soup in one bowl for one patient $=\pi r^{2} h$
$=\frac{22}{7} \times \frac{7}{2} \times \frac{7}{2} \times 4$
$=154 \mathrm{~cm}^3$
Therefore,
Soup for 250 patients $=154 \times 250$
$=38500 \mathrm{~cm}^{3}$
$=\frac{38500}{1000}$ litres
$=38.5$ litres
Hence, the hospital has to prepare $38.5$ litres daily to serve 250 patients.
