Given: A boy threw a marble $28\ m$ vertically up in the air which later fell and settled on the bottom of the pond $12\ m$ deep.

To do: To find the distance the marble fell.

Solution:

Total distance did the marble fell$=28\ m\ upward( \uparrow)+28\ m\ downward( \downarrow)+ 12\ m\ downward\ the\ bottom\ of\ the\ pond( \downarrow)$

$=68\ m$

Thus, after passing the distance of $68\ m$, the marble fell to the bottom of the pond.
