A ball is thrown upwards and then the catcher catches it . Can you apply principle of conservation of energy in this situation. Why or why not?
The principle of conservation of energy cannot be applied in this situation. This is because, when the ball is thrown upwards, the ball is given energy by the man. So the ball moves upwards. Again when it falls down the energy of the ball is removed from the ball while catching it. This energy is wasted as heat and sound while catching it. So conservation of energy cannot be applied in this situation. But conservation of energy can be applied for the time the ball is in air.
