When a ball is thrown vertically upwards it goes through a distance of 19.6m . Find the initial velocity of the ball and the time taken by it to rise to the highest point ( 9.8m/s2)
Let initial velocity = u m/s
time taken to rise to highest point = t sec
final velocity at highest point = 0
g = -9.8 m/s²(acting opposite to gravity)
distance travelled = 19.6 m
$s = \frac{(v^2 - u^2)}{2a}$
⇒ $19.6 = \frac{(0 - u^2)}{2 \times (-9.8)}$
⇒ $19.6 = \frac{ u^2}{19.6}$
⇒ $u^2= 19.6\times19.6$
⇒ u = 19.6 m/s
Hence initial velocity =19.6 m/s
v = u + at
⇒ 0 = 19.6 - 9.8t
⇒ 9.8t = 19.6
⇒ $t = \frac{19.6}{9.8}$
⇒ t = 2s
Time taken to reach the highest point is 2sec.
