Iron powder and sulphur powder were mixed together and divided into two parts A and B. When part A was heated strongly over a burner, then a substance C was formed. The part B was, however, not heated at all. When dilute hydrochloric acid was added to substance C, then gas D was evolved and when dilute hydrochloric acid was added to part B then gas E was evolved.(a) What type of substance is B?(b) What type of substance is C?(c) Name the gas (i) D, and (ii) E?(d) State one characteristic property of gas D.(e) Write one test to identify gas E.
(a) Iron powder and sulphur powder are mixed together, hence, B is a mixture (Fe + S).
(b) Here, iron powder and sulphur powder are mixed together and heated strongly on a burner. So, C is the compound iron sulphide (FeS).
(c) (i) dilute HCl was added to C (iron sulphide) to obtain D, hence, it is hydrogen sulphide gas.
$FeS + 2HCl → FeCl_2 + H_2S$
(ii) When dilute HCl is added to B, Fe present in the mixture reacts with the acid to form hydrogen gas. Hence E is Hydrogen gas.
$Fe + HCl → FeCl_2 + H_2$
(d) Gas D smells like rotten egg, hence, it is hydrogen sulphide gas.
(e) When a burning stick is held in the gas, the gas itself catches fire with a blue flame and a ‘pop’ sound. In the process, the burning stick extinguishes. Hence, E is Hydrogen gas.
Related Articles Iron fillings and sulphur were mixed together and divided into two parts, 'A' and 'B'. Part 'A' was heated strongly while Part 'B' was not heated . Dilute hydrochloric acid was added to both the Parts and evolution of gas was seen in both the cases. How will you identify the gases evolved?

The metal salt A is blue in colour. When salt A is heated strongly over a burner, then a substance B is eliminated and a white powder C is left behind. When a few drops of a liquid D are added to powder C, it becomes blue again. What could be A, B, C and D?

When a person eats sugary food, then organisms A present in his mouth act on sugar to produce a substance B. The substance B first dissolves the calcium salts from the top part C of the tooth and then from its middle part D forming holes E. These holes ultimately reach the part F in the lower part of tooth which contains nerves and blood vessels. The substance B irritates the nerve endings inside the tooth causing toothache.(a) What are (i) organisms A, and (ii) substance B?(b) What are (i) part C, and (ii) part D, of tooth known as?(c) By what name are the holes E in the tooth known?(d) Name the part F of the tooth.(e) What will happen if organisms A reach part F of the tooth?
