Edge Chasing Algorithms
Edge chasing is a technique used in operating systems and computer hardware to handle events or signals that occur asynchronously with the processor's clock cycle. This technique involves detecting and responding to events or signals as they occur, or as close to their occurrence as possible, to minimize the delay between the event and the system's response. Edge chasing algorithms are used to implement this technique and are an essential component of interrupt handling, input/output operations, and other time-sensitive tasks in modern computer systems.
Basic Edge Chasing Algorithms
The two basic edge chasing algorithms are polling and interrupts.
Polling is a simple edge chasing algorithm that involves checking the status of a device or input/output (I/O) operation at regular intervals by the processor. In this algorithm, the processor repeatedly sends requests to the device to check if it has any new data or needs any service. If there is no new data or request from the device, the processor continues its other tasks. If there is new data or a request, the processor handles it immediately.
Advantages of Polling

Disadvantages of Polling

Interrupts are a more sophisticated edge chasing algorithm that involves signaling the processor to suspend its current tasks and handle a specific event or signal immediately. Interrupts occur asynchronously with the processor's clock cycle and are used for time-critical events that need immediate attention.
Advantages of Interrupts

Efficient use of CPU cycles − Interrupts provide an efficient use of CPU cycles since the processor suspends its current tasks and handles the interrupt immediately when it occurs, allowing the system to respond quickly to time-critical events.
Low latency − Interrupts have low latency since they provide an immediate response to events, allowing the system to handle time sensitive events in real-time.
Scalable − Interrupts are scalable since the system can handle multiple interrupts simultaneously, allowing the system to respond to multiple events in parallel.
Disadvantages of Interrupts

Complexity − Interrupts can add complexity to the system since they require additional hardware and software support, such as interrupt controllers, interrupt handlers, and context switching.
Overhead − Interrupts involve additional overhead, such as saving and restoring the processor context and handling the interrupt, which can affect system performance.
Interrupt storms − Interrupt storms can occur when multiple interrupts are generated simultaneously, overwhelming the system and degrading system performance.
Advance Edge Chasing Algorithms
Here are some advanced edge chasing algorithms −
DMA (Direct Memory Access) − DMA is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that allows devices to directly access the system memory without involving the CPU. DMA reduces CPU overhead and improves system performance by allowing devices to transfer data in bulk without requiring the CPU to manage each transfer. DMA is commonly used for high-speed data transfers, such as disk I/O or network packets.
Interrupt Coalescing − Interrupt coalescing is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that reduces interrupt overhead by grouping multiple interrupts into a single interrupt. Interrupt coalescing improves system performance by reducing the number of interrupts and reducing the CPU overhead associated with handling interrupts.
Interrupt Vectoring − Interrupt vectoring is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that allows the system to handle different types of interrupts more efficiently. Interrupt vectoring assigns a unique vector to each interrupt type, allowing the system to handle each interrupt type differently and improving system performance.
Interrupt Throttling − Interrupt throttling is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that controls the rate at which interrupts are generated to prevent interrupt storms. Interrupt throttling limits the rate at which interrupts are generated, reducing the likelihood of interrupt storms and improving system stability.
Interrupt Masking − Interrupt masking is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that temporarily disables interrupts for specific devices or interrupt types. Interrupt masking can prevent interrupts from interfering with critical system operations or allow the system to prioritize interrupts based on their importance.
Interrupt Preemption − Interrupt preemption is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that allows the system to interrupt a lower-priority interrupt handler to handle a higher-priority interrupt. Interrupt preemption improves system performance by allowing the system to handle time-critical events first and allocating system resources accordingly.
Adaptive Polling − Adaptive polling is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that dynamically adjusts the polling rate based on the device's status. Adaptive polling reduces wasted CPU cycles by polling the device only when necessary and improves system performance by allocating CPU cycles more efficiently.
