Edge Chasing Algorithms


Introduction

Basic Edge Chasing Algorithms

The two basic edge chasing algorithms are polling and interrupts.

Polling

Polling is a simple edge chasing algorithm that involves checking the status of a device or input/output (I/O) operation at regular intervals by the processor. In this algorithm, the processor repeatedly sends requests to the device to check if it has any new data or needs any service. If there is no new data or request from the device, the processor continues its other tasks. If there is new data or a request, the processor handles it immediately.

Interrupts occur asynchronously with the processor's clock cycle and are used for time-critical events that need immediate attention.

Advantages of Interrupts

Disadvantages of Interrupts

Advance Edge Chasing Algorithms

DMA reduces CPU overhead and improves system performance by allowing devices to transfer data in bulk without requiring the CPU to manage each transfer. DMA is commonly used for high-speed data transfers, such as disk I/O or network packets.

  • Interrupt Coalescing − Interrupt coalescing is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that reduces interrupt overhead by grouping multiple interrupts into a single interrupt. Interrupt coalescing improves system performance by reducing the number of interrupts and reducing the CPU overhead associated with handling interrupts.

  • Interrupt Vectoring − Interrupt vectoring is an advanced edge-chasing algorithm that allows the system to handle different types of interrupts more efficiently. Interrupt vectoring assigns a unique vector to each interrupt type, allowing the system to handle each interrupt type differently and improving system performance.
